IMPROVEMENT OF CUSTOMS UNION FOR FAIR TRADE AND COMPETITIVENESS OF SMEs

PROJECT DETAILS

Coordinator Beneficiary: Turkish Enterprise and Business Confederation / Turkey

Co-beneficiary(s): Podnikatelská Aliancia Slovenska (PAS) / Slovakia

Project Duration: 12 months

Amount Granted / Project Budget: EUR 154,378.53 / EUR 171,531.7

GOAL OF THE PROJECT:

This project was implemented to develop joint activities and policies for improving and updating the customs union agreement via bilateral information sharing and cooperation at the SMEs level, to “improve and update the customs union agreement focusing on the SMEs,” and to raise awareness on its “positive impact on the economy of Turkey and the EU.”

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE PROJECT:

  • Country reports on common works and policies were published.
  • A declaration paper was published for the New Customs Union Agreement.
  • The Report titled “Within the Customs Union Agreement, Competitiveness of SMEs in Turkey and EU Countries” was published.
  • Round-table meetings were held in Istanbul and Bratislava.
  • A total of 16 study visits were organized to Turkey and Slovakia. One-on-one interviews were held with the leading figures in the business world active in different sectors. The outputs of these activities were included in the country and research reports.
  • An online platform (http://platform.cuforsmes.org/) accessible from the project website was established.

“We conducted activities for both our partners in the business world and the public sector, and the relevant ministries in Turkey and the EU Delegation, while including the points of view of the sectors and the SMEs within the discussion regarding the modernization of the Customs Union. We think that these activities have helped us gain momentum regarding the topic at hand. We believe that, with the research report that includes study visits, round-table activities, and project outputs, we created awareness regarding the necessity of modernization of the Customs Union and within which scope is it necessary to renew it. We issued a declaration, in which we presented a possible Customs Union modernization roadmap with a ten point action plan. Within this declaration, we believe that all global factors that determine the current commercial and economic relations require a much more comprehensive economic integration that reflects the truth of today rather than a technical modernization of the Customs Union between Turkey and the EU. We are of the opinion that especially digitalization, climate policies, and sustainable development must be considered as key dynamics for modernization of Customs Union between Turkey and the EU. With our project, we are happy to bring this topic forward in the agenda of the business world again.”

TURKEY 2050 CALCULATOR: FACILITATING CLIMATE POLICY DIALOGUE THROUGH ADAPTATION OF AN EU LOW CARBON PATHWAY TOOL

PROJECT DETAILS

Coordinator Beneficiary: Southeast European Change Network Foundation / Bosnia and Herzegovina

Co-beneficiary(s): Economy Policy Research Foundation of Turkey (TEPAV) / Turkey, Climate Action Network Europe / Belgium

Project Duration: 15 months

Amount Granted / Project Budget: EUR 198,693.84 / EUR 220,770.93

GOAL OF THE PROJECT:

This project was implemented to mobilize, strengthen, and professionalize the CSOs in dialogue with the relevant actors in EU climate and energy policies.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE PROJECT:

  • Know-how was shared based on “common approach” by trainings, online coaching, and peer review meetings.
  • A base model workshop was organized in Western Balkans. The policy framework was analyzed by reviewing the legal framework.
  • Baseline situation report was published.
  • Meetings with policy makers in the EU and Turkey were organized.

AREA OF ADAPTATION

“We reviewed the current legal framework, and the existence and the availability of the relevant data in climate and energy in Turkey through the national and EU-level partner meetings, dialogue activities, and expert interviews within the scope of our project. Through the local dialogue meetings, we had the opportunity to consult with the partners regarding the environmental and socioeconomical results of Turkey’s possible 2050 policies. We shared information and best practices regarding how the EU’s climate-environment-energy policies were applied and how they affected all partners (public, private sector, and CSOs) at the workshop in Belgium. We believe that, with the help of these activities, our project constituted a proper basis for international collaboration and knowledge/experience sharing.”
